WHAT IS AN OTOLARYNGOLOGIST?

Otolaryngology - head and neck surgery is a specialty concerned with medical treatment and surgery of the ear, nose, throat and related structures of the head and neck. Otolaryngology is abbreviated from a still longer name - otorhinolaryngology. The latter derives more aptly from the Greek base words: oto - ear, rhino - nose, and laryn - throat. The specialty encompasses cosmetic facial reconstruction, surgery of benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck, management of patients with loss of hearing and balance, endoscopic examination of air and food passages and treatment of allergic, sinus, laryngeal, thyroid and esophageal disorders.

To qualify for the American Board of Otolaryngology certification examination, a physician must complete five or more years of specialty training after four years of Medical School. The well-trained otolaryngologist has a thorough knowledge of the anatomy, physiology, bio-chemistry, bacteriology, pharmacology and pathology of all those organs and physical structures in the head and neck region.

Virtually all ear, nose and throat specialists routinely handle cases such as tonsillectomies, adenoidectomies, nose bleeds, infected mastoids and sinus disease. Those specially trained in ear work are well equipped to restore hearing through modern microsurgery or other operations used to correct deafness. Others have a special interest in neurotology and various problems of balance. The physician's qualifications and inclinations as well as community needs will influence the breadth and limits of an individual's practice.
