Office Laser Tonsillectomy Information

New advances in Laser technology have provided alternatives to conventional tonsillectomy in the adult. The Co2 laser can now be used in an office setting for patients complaining of sore throats, halitosis or recurrent tonsil infections. The new procedure called Laser Assisted Serial Tonsillectomy (LAST) is performed under local anesthesia and takes about 20 minutes. There is no bleeding and pain is considerably reduced compared to conventional tonsillectomy. Several sessions staged over the course of a few months may be necessary for a cure. The procedure reduces tonsil volume and eliminates the tonsil crypts that serve as foci for chronic tonsillitis. Food particles and fluids tend to trap in these deep crypts and may be the cause of halitosis and chronic infection. The laser surgery eliminates and/or obliterates these surface pockets (crypts) of the tonsils by vaporizing them away, resulting in a more smooth tonsil surface. Laser Assisted Serial Tonsillectomy is a proven alternative to conventional tonsillectomy without the morbidity of pain and bleeding encountered with regular tonsillectomy. In addition, patients return to work immediately after the procedure or within 12-48 hours. Dr. Gatti performed the first reported office Laser Assisted Serial Tonsillectomy in Lake County on April 20, 1994.
